Optimization meets learning for complex decisions under uncertainty

Acting Professor · Chair of Decision and Operation Technologies · Bielefeld University

E-Mail Google Scholar ORCID PUB

I am Acting Professor at the Chair of Decision and Operation Technologies and Assistant Professor (Juniorprofessor) of Decision Analytics at the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, Bielefeld University. I develop decision support methods that combine optimization, machine learning and simulation, especially for planning under uncertainty, with applications in health care, logistics and environmental decision-making.

Research

Decisions under uncertainty

Two-stage and data-driven optimization; decision-focused learning.

Health care analytics

Decision support for hospitals: ICU occupancy and admissions, clinical pathways, staff scheduling.

Network models and decision diagrams

Compact, learnable representations of scheduling and combinatorial optimization problems.

Language models for optimization

From problem descriptions to optimization models and new heuristics.

Environment and sustainability

Value of information and decision-focused learning for environmental monitoring and marine conservation.

Logistics and supply chains

Fulfilment, inventory, routing and loading, large-scale supply networks, and delivery scheduling for space logistics.
